About Data and Statistical Services

Data and Statistical Services (DSS) is a part of the Social Science Reference Center in Firestone Library at Princeton University.

Statistical consulting services are available to currently enrolled/employed members of Princeton University. The consultants provide statistical and software consulting for undergraduates, graduate students and faculty engaged in quantitative analysis of electronic data as part of independent research (JPs, senior thesis, dissertation, term papers, etc.) in a variety of academic disciplines. We assist in the choice, application, and interpretation of quantitative methods, and with the use of statistical software needed to implement these methods (Stata, SPSS and basic R).

Assistance

We provide assistance by walk-in service when the DSS lab is staffed (see schedule on the sidemenu), by appointment and/or via email (data@princeton.edu). Assistance can only be provided to current Princeton members who have a valid Princeton email address. We do not provide support via telephone

About accessing data resources

Data sets we own or have access to are subject to copyright and are licensed for academic or research use only by current students, faculty, and staff at Princeton University.

Data may be accessible on the web, from our server, on CDs, or via computer programs installed on the Social Science Reference Center (now RIS) computers.

The web and the server
The links should lead you to data from our site either to web sites or our server downloadable location. In downloading from our server, some data files may be in a format that is not accessible on your computer. Contact a statistical consultant if you need help in using the files.

CDs
Some data files are stored in CDs. Make a note of the study number, and make an appointment with a reference librarian to use the CDs. You will need your Princeton ID. You can not take the CDs out of RIS. The CDs may be used in the DSS computer lab. Most CDs have their own data extraction tools that need to be installed. You will not be able to install the programs on library's public computers, but you can install programs on the LIB-DSS11 in the DSS Lab. It will be helpful for you to bring a thumb drive, as LIB-DSS11 is not connected to the internet.

Computer programs

The following programs are available at RIS computers. No reservation is necessary to use these programs.

  • Bloomberg - one work station
  • Datastream - three licenses
  • Tick Data - Workstation 10 (LIB-SSRC10)
  • Morningstar - All workstations
