  • Barro-Lee Educational Attainment Dataset
    Contains enrollments at all education levels (primary, secondary, and tertiary) for a sample of 89 countries from 1820 to 2010 at 5-year intervals. Contains estimated educational attainment for the total, female and male populations from 1870 to 2010. The estimates are available in 5-year intervals for 89 countries. Contains projections of educational attainment for the total, female and male populations from 2015 to 2040. The estimates are available in 5-year intervals for 146 countries. Can also be found in an easy to use interface from the World Bank which also contains the supplement from IIASA/VID which provides projections to 2050.

  • Education Statistics (World Bank)
    Worldwide data on education from national statistical reports, statistical annexes of new publications, and other data sources. Includes public expenditure data.

  • Generations and Gender Surveys
    Longitudinal Survey of 18-79 year olds in 19 countries that aims to improve our understanding of the various factors which affect the relationships between parents and children (generations) and between partners (gender). A broad array of topics including fertility, partnership, the transition to adulthood, economic activity, care duties and attitudes are covered by the survey. Includes a separate contextual database that is organized around central topics closely linked to the program. The variables describe variations of context over time and among regions that are believed to have an impact on the behaviors and relations that constitute the key dependent variables of the survey: fertility, partnership, transition to adulthood, economic activity as well as the intergenerational and gender relations between people expressed e.g. in care relations or the organization of paid and unpaid work. The data include statistical norms, legal norms and regulations, measures of welfare state policies and institutions as well as general economic and cultural indicators. Registration is required.

  • Mathematics Teaching in the 21st Century (2006)
    Cross-national study of the preparation of middle school mathematics teachers. Countries participating included Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), South Korea (Korea), Bulgaria, Germany, Mexico, and the United States. Data were collected from teachers in their first and last year of preparation by sampling institutions in each country. Future teachers were asked about their backgrounds, course-taking and program activities, knowledge relevant to their teaching (mathematical and pedagogical), and beliefs and perspectives on content and pedagogy.

  • National Family Research of Japan 2008
    Series of nationwide surveys of families selected by random sampling in Japan. The NFRJ study group aims to describe and explain the changing individual attitudes and variations of experiences in regard to life events related to changes in families, and longitudinal variations of family groups recognized by individuals. National Family Research of Japan 2008 (NFRJ 2008) is the third survey in the NFRJ series. Most of the questions in NFRJ 2008 were taken from NFRJ 1998 and NFRJ 2003. However, the wording of some questions and the available responses were altered. NFRJ 2008 had 3 forms of questionnaire for separate age groups: younger (28-47 years), middle-aged (48-62 years), and older (63-72 years). Opinions were collected on marital quality, work and family, parenting, parent-child relationships, siblings relationships, and division of household labor. Additional topics include respondent relationships with siblings, in-laws, and parents, employment type, work environment, and work-life balance. Demographic information includes respondent age, gender, education level, income, and marriage and employment status.

    Sample Size: 9400 individuals in 480 tracts were selected.

  • School-to-work transition survey (SWTS) micro data files
    Between 2004 and 2006, the ILO partnered with 8 countries (Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, Iran, Kosovo, Mongolia, Nepal, Syria) to pilot its SWTS.

  • Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC)
    Assesses the proficiency of adults from age 16 onwards in literacy, numeracy and problem solving in technology rich environments. The data collection took place from August 1, 2011 to March, 31 2012 in most participating countries. Around 166 000 adults, representing 724 million adults aged 16 to 65, were surveyed in 24 countries and sub-national regions in the official language/s of the countries.

  • Third International Mathematics and Science Study: International Curriculum Analysis, 1992-1995 (TIMSS)
    Provided curricular and textbook information from each country participating. Comparative study of education in mathematics and the sciences conducted in over 40 countries on 5 continents. The goal was to measure student achievement in mathematics and science in participating countries and to assess some of the curricular and classroom factors that are related to student learning in these subjects.

  • Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) (1995+)
    Provides reliable and timely data on the mathematics and science achievement of U.S. 4th- and 8th-grade students compared to that of students in other countries. Collected in 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2011. Next round of collection will be in 2015. Also see the NCES Bibliography for literature that has used this data.

  • UNICEF: Monitoring the Situation of Children and Women
    Contains the full range of statistical information made available by UNICEF. Includes the official global statistical databases published in The State of the World's Children. Indicators on child survival and health, child nutrition, maternal health, water and sanitation, education, child protection, HIV/AIDS, immunization, and Millennium Development Goals.

  • Wellbeing in Developing Countries (2003-2006)
    Series of studies which aim to develop a conceptual and methodological approach to understanding the social and cultural construction of wellbeing in developing countries (26 community profiles in Bangladesh; Ethiopia; Peru; Thailand). Include details on (1) physical description of the community; historical background and key events; people (population and demographics); languages, religion, social settlement; material resources (occupation, market, infrastructure, provision of government and non government services); natural resources and land use (water, livestock, forest, wildlife, crops); human resources and processes (education, migration, health); socio-political resources (social and political groups, local institutions, social stratification); cultural resources (traditions and beliefs, religious and non religious events); values and satisfaction; incomes (self-employment, wage income, and in kind); expenditures (production costs, food and non-food items); and credit and saving behavior.
