Finding Data: About Data

Data sets we own or have access to are subject to copyright and are licensed for academic or research use only by current students, faculty, and staff at Princeton University.

Data may be accessible on the web, from our server, on CDs, or via computer programs installed on the Social Science Reference Center (SSRC) computers.

The web and the server
The links should lead you to data from our site either to web sites or our server downloadable location. In downloading from our server, some data files may be in a format that is not accessible on your computer. Contact a statistical consultant if you need help in using the files.

CDs
Some data files are stored in CDs. Make a note of the study number, and make an appointment with a reference librarian to use the CDs. You will need your Princeton ID. You can not take the CDs out of SSRC. The CDs may be used in the DSS computer lab. Most CDs have their own data extraction tools that need to be installed. You will not be able to install the programs on library's public computers, but you can install programs on the LIB-DSS11 in the DSS Lab. It will be helpful for you to bring a thumb drive, as LIB-DSS11 is not connected to the internet.

Computer programs
The following programs are available at SSRC computers. No reservation is necessary to use these programs.

  • Bloomberg - one work station
  • Datastream - three licenses
  • Tick Data - Workstation 10 (LIB-SSRC10)
  • Morningstar - Workstation 6 (LIB-SSRC06)
