President's Malaria Initiative (2008-2011)

Interagency initiative led by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented in collaboration with other U.S. government agencies such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Department of Defense. The initiative aims to reduce malaria-related mortality in countries with high incidence of malaria in the sub-Saharan Africa region and the Greater Mekong subregion in Asia by providing assistance and funding to implement malaria prevention and treatment measures. Strategies to decrease mortality include insecticide-treated mosquito nets, indoor residual spraying, accurate diagnosis and treatment with artemisinin-based combination therapies, and intermittent treatment of pregnant women. Countries participating in the initiative prepare one-year malaria operational plans reviewing their malaria situation statuses, and malaria control and prevention policies.
