The 1st China National Sample Survey on Disability (1987): In order to have a comprehensive understanding of the quantity, structure, distribution, causes of disability, family conditions and their rehabilitation, education, employment and participation in social life of the disabled population, and provide a reliable basis for the formulation of laws, guidelines and policies concerning persons with disabilities, the State Council approved to conduct the First China National Sample Survey on Disability. The standard time for the sample survey was 0:00 on April 1, 1987. The survey was conducted simultaneously in 29 provinces. Using probability proportional sampling method, 424 counties were selected from 29 provinces. A total of 369,816 households and 1,579,314 individuals were surveyed, accounting for 1.50‰ of the country's total population. The categories of people with disabilities surveyed include: visual disability, hearing and speech disability, intellectual disability, physical disability and mental disability; Persons with two or more disabilities are classified as comprehensive disabilities.
The 2nd China National Sample Survey on Disability (2006): In order to have a comprehensive understanding of the quantity, structure, distribution, causes of disability, family conditions and their rehabilitation, education, employment and participation in social life of the disabled population, and provide reference to make plan on the cause for the people with disability as well as establish relevant laws and policies for them, the State Council approved to conduct the Second China National Sample Survey on Disability.
The standard time of the Second China National Sample Survey on Disability was 0:00 on April 1, 2006. The registered subjects were permanent residents of the People's Republic of China and residing in the mainland of the People's Republic of China. 734 counties were sampled from 31 provinces, and a total of 771,797 households and 2,526,145 persons were surveyed. The sample ratio of the survey was 1.93‰. The survey consists of 3 parts: household survey, individual survey and community survey. The content of the survey include the situation of the sampled households and individuals, with an emphasis on the causes of disability, life situation, and their main needs. The screening and grading of disability is according to the "Disability Screening Method of the Second National Sample Survey on Disability". - Sample
